Translators’ words
We choose Ms. Hon’s Fish Door as our source text because we appreciate its implications and the relationships between the characters (Shine, Shine’s mother, and Leaf). Additionally, the original text's length is suitable for a cooperative translation effort involving seven translators. Apart from the word count, the original material is manageable for beginning literary translators as well.
We run across a number of challenges while translating. One of them is the need to be aware of the differences between the grammatical structures of Chinese and English. We need to change the position of the phrase in Chinese. Moreover, as English wordings often contain several meanings in one or two words, we must shorten the Chinese terminology and create a more precise sentence.
Finally, the target readers of our translation should be people who understand English, but not Chinese. However, when we interpret, we read both the original Chinese text and the translation simultaneously, so we overlook to specifically assess the readability of the translated contents and instead concentrate on how to convey the text's original meaning. Fortunately, thanks to our professor, who patiently checked our text several times, our translation can succeed in creating a piece of fluent and readable work.
As illustrators, we face several difficulties in this translation project. First, the website platform, WIX, is a brand new system to many of us. It is challenging to learn and discover the functions all by ourselves, including searching for a suitable background picture and music. The technical problem has taken us lots of time as well. Multiple users are not allowed to edit the page at the same time so we have to align the styles through communication and confirm the editing time precisely.
However, we believe that this kind of experience can make us well-equipped as the management of websites may be required in the workplace. Moreover, we realize that inserting more paratexts can help us and the translators increase the visibility of our own expressions. It could hopefully help the readers understand the sourced text better too. Finally, we all considered it rewarding work as we acquired new skills and further enhanced our problem-solving skills.
