Translators' Note
It is a great pleasure to present the English translation of Chan Hay Ching's profound and intricate story, 《天涯》(The World's End). This piece is an exquisite tapestry of emotions and experiences, spun from the challenges and struggles of modern life in a traditional Chinese society. It serves as a dramatic representation of the pressures faced by new immigrants in Hong Kong, and the complexities of love in an alien land, told in a manner that is both delicate and profoundly human.
《天涯》(The World's End), a richly textured narrative that delves into the themes of identity, love, and human endurance. The story unfolds gently, revealing its depth and intricacies with each delicate stroke, much like an artist's masterpiece taking shape on canvas.
Translating this work from Chinese to English was a journey marked by challenges. The fluid timeline of the original text presented a significant hurdle in maintaining the integrity of tense usage in English. Our solution was mainly embrace the past tense, allowing readers to navigate the narrative as if reminiscing a dream from long ago.
Moreover, the original text is resplendent with traditional Chinese poetry and idioms, which posed a considerable challenge in ensuring that the English version retained its cultural essence and images. Our goal was not just to translate, but to present the cultural and lyrical beauty of the original text, creating a seamless fusion of two linguistic worlds.
《天涯》 (The World's End) is a masterclass in the use of rhetorical devices including metaphors and parallel structure, coupled with profound psychological insights. It skillfully interweaves verses from the Bible and traditional Chinese poetry to articulate the characters' internal landscapes, making it a literary tapestry of exceptional depth and beauty.
We invite you on this journey with Lingyun and Anning. 《天涯》 (The World's End) is not just a narrative but a panoramic view into a vibrant culture and the human spirit's resilience. As you immerse yourself in this narrative, we hope our translation has succeeded in capturing the soul of Chan Hay Ching's original work, illuminating the diverse and rich tapestry of Hong Kong's immigrant narrative.
