Student Translation Project

This short story Obsession (迷情), is inspired by the movies “L’Avventura” and “Blow-up” directed by an Italian director, Michelangelo Antonioni. “L’Avventura” was also named as 迷情 in Chinese. Mary Wong creates a mysterious atmosphere like the movie “L’Avventura” does. A character in the story disappeared and his whereabouts was still uncertain until the end of the story. The story is also open-ended to leave the readers hanging.
The text is divided into different times of a day: introduction, morning, afternoon and evening. We summarized the “morning” and “evening” parts, and translated the introduction and middle part with subheading - “Afternoon”(下午). We wanted to lay out the backstory for non-Chinese readers before diving into the story. We choose to translate the particularly intense “afternoon” part because there is a great tension between the main characters, Cassy Ko and Mrs. Lee.
