The translator translated this prose, as it deeply touched the essence of a terminally ill and the nuances of the plight of family members against adversities thrown by life. In addition to the core theme, dining-out culture of Hong Kong merged into every-day practice is intertwined with the events recounted. The prose on the one hand narrates a universal truth based on grieving at the loss of a family member, on the other, depicts local culinary culture. I believe that Nepalese residing in Hong Kong can easily relate where references are made to places and delicacies. Likewise, Nepalese elsewhere can also get to know the local lifestyle and mores. In terms of translation, a number of words are translated into a way a Nepali can understand it better, detaching from a source text, however others have been retained as they are, in order to provide native subtleties of the source text and culture. The translator’s effort hence, is an assortment of the merging of languages and cultures.
